A New Twist on TDD

(I actually wrote this in 2005 and somehow never posted it. so here it is 15 years later!) I was emailed the following requirement today from a recruiter: TDD (Teat (sic) Driven Development) / C# / .Net Developers Needed in CHICAGO I'm a married so I had to turn this intriguing possibility down...

Microsoft Edge Wins

Image
I’ve switched to Microsoft Edge for my browser, away from Firefox and Chrome. I liked Firefox and its interface, but it couldn’t run google maps very well and lacked some Chrome-only extensions. Chrome is nice too but is a resource hog and has an overly complex interface. Edge is the best of both worlds, it runs extremely fast on my 11-year-old MacBook Pro, uses a lot less resources, and runs most Chrome extensions. The interface is very well done. It imported all my bookmarks from Firefox with no problems. This one browser handles everything I needed the other two for and does it far better. I’m incredibly happy, thank you Microsoft, and all the open source projects that made Edge possible! https://www.microsoft.com/edge

Bottom of line VPS at GoDaddy surprisingly Cheap and Capable

I recently bought shallowenigma.com and am paying G oDaddy  $7.99 a month for their bottom of the line VPS L inux  – 1cpu, 1gb ram, 20gb storage. At this level, it won’t even run the http admin console, so you  have to  do everything by hand at the command line via  ssh , apt, ed*.  It came with ubuntu 16 something, which I upgraded to 18.04.4 right away. I also installed apache2, https support,  wordpress , ftp, mail. These capabilities would normally cost x per month, but since I'm using this super low-level  geek command line special, they’re also effectively included for free + the installation work. For fun I also installed git, mono, dotnet  sdk , emacs, and  omnisharp . In other words, along with all the normal  unix  stuff, that which makes up my preferred development environment.   Turns out it compiles and runs all my tests twice as fast as my dev laptop, an  11 year old  mac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8gb. Not sure what to make of  that.  Perhaps, uh, that my laptop

Well, it's been a long time :) Probably the 3 most significant developments are that:  1) I became disabled I suffer from cyclical depression that kills my ability to concentrate, among other things. It comes and goes, sometimes for a couple of weeks, sometimes for a couple of months. The good news is that when I'm doing well, I'm pretty much doing as well as ever. 2) I became divorced So marriage #2 was a bust, unfortunately  3) I came out as trans This is something I've felt when I was young, in grade school, but this was Texas in the 1970's a people didn't want to hear that I was a girl, so I learned to shut up about it (after a couple of spankings). For the longest time I believe I was a guy, a very poor excuse for guy, who wanted to be a girl but that was impossible. But I came to see I am female, and always have been. I've been on hormone replacement therapy for 3 years now, present as female 24/7 and am pursuing vaginoplasty - thank G

I'm joining the fun and hopefully profitable world of smart phone app development. I'm targeting both iPhone and Android platforms. Android is easier to develop for, but Apple has the larger market. I understand the need to customize applications to their environment, but I wish I could at least share model code between platforms. Unfortunately the iPhone is programmed in Objective C, while Android uses a version of Java. One solution is to base, as much as possible, development in browser based technologies – HTML, CSS, and Javascript - but that approach is not applicable to all kinds of applications. Honestly, I wish I could do C# on both, though Java/Eclipse is not that bad.
